A turn of the century farmhouse
located in the mountains of Western North Carolina.

Originally built in the 1890's, the house was remodeled and enlarged about the turn of the century by the noted North Carolina architect Erle G. Stillwell. It has been the home of John Allison Hudgens and Sarah Smyth Hudgens (daughter of Captain Ellison A. Smyth of Charleston and later of Connemara, Flat Rock, NC), and their descendants from 1921 until the present time.

It is now being offered for holiday and vacation rentals on a weekly or weekend basis, or for special events. It is fully furnished with family antiques, pictures and heirlooms throughout, and includes a fully equipped kitchen and laundry with all modern appliances. The three bedrooms and sleeping porch, all upstairs, contain a total of nine beds (one queen, four doubles, two twins and two 3/4 beds, plus a crib). The sleeping porch with its five beds has been a family favorite for generations.

The original claw-footed tub is in the bathroom upstairs and there is a shower in the downstairs bathroom. All bed linens and towels are furnished. The bedrooms and sleeping porch have ceiling fans, as does the front porch. There are gas logs in both the living room and the parlor.

The house, newly renovated and updated with modern conveniences, is located on three acres just off I-26 in Flat Rock, North Carolina. There are also several outbuildings, a modern play yard for children, along with croquet, horseshoes and barbeque grill for adults. It is close to Hendersonville, the Flat Rock Playhouse, Connemara (home of Carl Sandburg after Captain Smyth's death), as well as the nearby attractions of Chimney Rock, the Biltmore House in Asheville, the Brevard Music Center and the Blue Ridge Parkway among others. The area offers many golf courses, waterfalls, and excellent hiking and fishing opportunities.

Reservations should be made as far in advance as possible. A deposit at the time of reservation will secure the rental of the house (refundable if cancelled at least 24 hours in advance of arrival date). Any damage to the house or furnishings would be the responsibility of the person making the reservation.

Rental includes cleaning and laundry; the house is a non-smoking environment, and there is a no pet policy. Check in is 4:00 pm and check out is 11:00 am (or both later by arrangement).
